Does the Affordable Care Act cover individuals with mental health problems?

Yes. Mental and behavioral health services are considered what’s called essential health benefits. Most individual and small employer health insurance plans, including all plans offered through the Health Insurance Marketplace®, must cover mental health and substance use disorder services. Also required are services that can help support people with behavioral health challenges.
