11/7/2014: The Latest on LTSS in Indian Country: Eight New Webinars
Sharing information encourages support and improvement of long-term services and supports (LTSS). The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, Indian Health Services, and the Administration on Aging collaborate to present monthly webinars. These webinars are intended to create a dialogue among tribal program staff, community health representatives, and others involved in providing LTSS care to American Indians and Alaska Natives.
Falls are the leading cause of both fatal and nonfatal injuries in adults aged 65 and older. How can tribes build a program that will diminish falls and resulting injuries? The recent webinar, Preventing Falls and Injuries: Building a Program that Works, explains the building blocks of an effective prevention program.
Do residents of long-term care facilities have the right to come and go as they please without asking for permission? Another recent webinar, Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program: Advocacy Services for Tribal Elders Living in Long-Term Care Facilities, explains how the long-term care ombudsman program helps clarify and advocate for residents' rights.
These are just two of eight new webinars that are now posted in the webinar archive on the LTSS Technical Assistance Center's website. Other webinar topics include:
- American Indians and Alaska Natives: Census Counts, Definitions, and Boundaries
- Long-Term Services and Supports Technical Assistance Center – an introduction to using the website
- Aging and Disability Resource Centers (ADRCs) and Tribal Communities: The Wisconsin Experience
- Medication Management Among the Elderly: Preventing Rx Abuse and Misuse
- Leveraging Resources for LTSS
Most recently, on September 24, Denise Pommer, Director of Aging and Long-Term Care, presented a new webinar, titled, "How One Tribe Is Working to Build Long-Term Care Capacity in Their Tribal Community: An Overview of the Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin's Model of Long-Term Care."
The LTSS webinars are scheduled the fourth Wednesday of every month from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. EDT. For more information, please visit the Long Term Services and Support (LTSS) Technical Assistance Center (TAC) website located at http://go.cms.gov/AIAN.
