Pueblo of Zuni has an extensive network of elder-focused long term services and supports. The programs work together to provide a comprehensive spectrum of care to elders within the community. The main components of this network include the Zuni Senior Center, Zuni Adult Day Center, Zuni Home Health Services, Zuni IHS Hospital Elder Care Program, and a palliative care program that is a joint effort of the IHS hospital and the Home Health Services.
The senior center includes a Senior Companion Program, in which elderly volunteers provide up to 4 hours a week of visitation, during which time they do light chores and meal preparation for the person in need of assistance. The Zuni Adult Day Center, which began in 1998 as a volunteer-run program out of a room in the senior center, has its own facility (built in 2006) in which it provides respite care and activities for tribal members with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia. The program receives financial support from the Title VI Nutrition for the Elderly, Title V Older Worker Program, and State funding.
Zuni Home Health Services provides clinical support, including skilled nursing and home health aide services. In addition, it offers personal care assistance, runs a palliative care program, and provides medical supplies and equipment rental. It is also in the process of setting up a transportation service. Home Health Services is a federally qualified health center and receives Medicaid and Medicare reimbursement.
The IHS hospital’s Elder Care Program is a multidisciplinary program to assess and manage the needs of frail elders. This program collaborates with Zuni Home Health Services, Senior Center, public health nurses, and other community groups. The hospital also participates in the palliative care program run through Home Health Services.
These services and others are coordinated by the Elderly Services Coordinating Committee. This committee was originally formed as the Elder Task Force to identify and address gaps in services for elders within the community. In 2009 the Pueblo of Zuni determined that services had progressed to a level that the Task Force could be re-envisioned as a Coordinating Committee that meets quarterly rather than monthly.
