Program Memorandum Intermediaries/Carriers: Autologous Stem Cell Transplantation (AuSCT) for Patients With Multiple Myeloma

Guidance that revises Medicare instructions in the Coverage Issues Manual, for autologous stem cell transplantation (AuSCT) with multiple myeloma patients, to state that effective October 1, 2000, single AuSCT is only covered for Durie-Salmon Stage II or III patients who fit the following requirements: newly diagnosed or responsive multiple myeloma; adequate cardiac, renal, pulmonary, and hepatic function.
