Replacing the Use of Unique Physician Identification Numbers (UPINs) With the National Provider Identifiers (NPIs)

All shared system maintainers are requested to perform requisite system analysis to identify all situational uses of UPINs in the claims processing systems with the understanding that as of May 23, 2007, no new UPINs will be assigned, the UPIN Registry will be eliminated and UPINs will no longer be required in FFS Claims processing. Upon completion of the analysis each shared system maintainer shall provide recommendations for coding changes which will be required to replace UPINs with NPI in their respective systems. Hours must be reserved in the April 2006 release for
each shared system maintainer and the Common Working File maintainer to conduct this work.
